it's commonly said that 'freedom isn’t free.' this is mistaken. 

freedom is what there is. 

this realization might appear to cost something, in biological form; any materialist can come up with a good case for it.

that case falls apart at the limit of materialist metaphysics.

any constraint is self-contraint. as such liberty is unearned(, though the illusion of being earned may persist).

there is no way out of this:

'neither can you catch hold of it, nor can you get rid of it; in not being able to get it, you get it.'
